Philadelphia’s own (Sandy) Alex G wrapped up his tour this past Saturday along with Philly native Japanese Breakfast and Brooklyn’s Cende.
Cende opened the show with songs from their debut album, #1 Hit Single. My favorite of the set was “What I Want,” an aggressive song that was even more bright when performed live. Cende’s energy soared and their upbeat punk rock sound really loosened up the audience.
Japanese Breakfast debuted songs from their second album, Soft Sounds from Another Planet. The band had just released a three-track-long playlist on Spotify to promote the new album. This playlist includes the tracks “Road Head,” “Boyish,” and “Machinist.” The hypnotic “Road Head” was equally enchanting to hear live; “Boyish” floats up the stream with a similar vibe. Last is the driving “Machinist.” This song prompted lead singer Michelle Zauner to dive into the front row of the audience to dance along to the synth-pop anthem. Japanese Breakfast’s sophomore album Soft Sounds from Another Planet is set for release on Friday, July 14th.
(Sandy) Alex G’s performance was dominated by tracks from his newest album, Rocket, which was released this May. He kicked off his set with the mellow “Judge.” “Proud” was very lively and the audience was happy to tap their feet along. His set also included tracks from Beach Music with a sprinkling of songs from Trick, Rules, and DSU. The audience was more than excited to hear throwback tracks like “Mary,” “Snot,” and “Brite Boy.” The audience went wild when he brought Zauner back to the stage for back-up vocals on “Brite Boy.” (Sandy) Alex G even performed audience requests, including blink-182’s “What’s My Name Again?”
There was no better way for (Sandy) Alex G to close his tour than with with a sold-out performance at Union Transfer. Look out for a few more shows this summer, and check out his new album!
