Alt-J played an insane set at Washington, DC’s Landmark Festival last weekend.
The four-member band, Joe Newman (guitar, lead vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards, backing vocals), Thom Green (drums) and Cameron Knight (guitar, bass, sampler), took the festival’s main stage to a crowd filled with fans that had been waiting anywhere from two to six hours. The area in front of the stage was packed and the energy was unbelievable.
They naturally opened with their Intro before moving into Something Good. The set included hits Breezeblocks and Left Hand Free as well as crowd favorites Fitzpleasure, Taro, Dissolve Me, Hunger of the Pine and Tessellate. Newman let the crowd trade lines with him on Matilda and the energy hit a new high.
They kept the crowd engaged and excited through the entire 60-minute set, leaving very little time in between songs for fans to recover from the dancing and shouting. The guitar and piano solos flaunted the talents of Newman and Unger-Hamilton, and Knight, who is touring with the band, added texture to the tracks by playing a variety of instruments which includes a mini keyboard and maracas. The lights and screens on either side of the stage offered enthralling visual accompaniments to the set.
Alt-J’s music is unique and captivating and their message powerful. This performance somehow took their talent and genius to another level. With each song the crowd was impressed at the flawless transitions, tantalizing rhythms and catchy hook lines.
Definitely go see Alt-J on the rest of the group’s 2015 tour, including a number of stops in California and Texas. Check out the group’s website and social media pages as well.
