Dutch tropical house DJ Bakermat blew it out of the water when the he delivered an unbelievable show at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. Known for mixing soulful but minimalist jazz with a deep techno bass, Bakermat has performed at popular music events such as Tomorrowland and Ultra Miami. The DC crowd treated him nicely and provided a warm welcome; the line to enter the club wrapped around the corner and snaked up two blocks. The long wait was well worth it, with Bakermat complimenting the audience multiple times over the night. Thanks, Bakermat - you were awesome too.
Lodewijk Fluttert discovered his love for producing music while taking a break from his Psychology studies at Utretch University in the Netherlands. In 2012, he uploaded some of his work on SoundCloud and YouTube, and his popularity skyrocketed from there. His first official single “Vandaag (Some Day)” was a huge hit in Europe. It reached the top 10 singles charts in Austria, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Vandaag mixes Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech with a light drum beat, keyboard tunes, and most importantly, wistful saxophone melodies.
During his set, Fluttert jammed out with the saxophonist player, who tactfully showed off with his expert solos and energetic improvisation. He executed every note with skill and made his godlike perfection seem oh so easy. Every time he hit the alto, the crowd went absolutely wild. Anyone could tell that the duo had a great chemistry; they complement each other's intensity and energy without flaw. These saxophone solos have become iconic in the genre, making Bakermat's music immediately recognizable, even to the casual listener.
Along with artists including Kygo and Klingande, Bakermat is considered a pioneer of the tropical house music genre that surfaced in 2013. A subgenre of house music, tropical house carries a light and uplifting tune that relaxes listeners and makes them want to move along with the 4/4 kick drum beat. These elements are just some of what make Bakermat’s music so easy to listen to and fun to dance along with.
The packed concert floor featured a sea of bumping music listeners. Before the show, a few people in line commented on the huge crowd -- "I didn't realize people here were still so into tropical house music." Fans of Bakermat clearly proved him wrong: if you thought the house phase was even close to over, just go to a Bakermat show and you will definitely rethink it. Overall, fantastic show by Dutch DJ Bakermat. Hats off to him! Check out the group's social media pages and listen to their music below!
