The presence of females within the hip-hop industry is beginning to grow, and Che’ Amour hopes to continue the trend. She began writing at the age of 14 and found an instant love for music. Amour played basketball when she was eight years old and thought she would be playing on the court for a while. But soon something else sparked her interest. “In 10th grade my friends promoted artists for a record label. Some of them rapped and performed and it inspired me to start writing and I eventually joined the record label becoming head of promotion,” Amour said.
Amour, being a music major in college, began performing at shows and instantly knew it was something she wanted to continue to do. Che’ started her career just like anyone else: starting in a duo and rap group, which eventually did not work out. “My mentor told me I can’t just rap, I must understand the history of it,” Amour said. Che’ loved Jay-Z, reading his book, watching interviews and started to pay attention to Nas and Wu-Tang as well.
Eventually Amour caught a break when she met Moe Ager, a strong producer within the industry, and the two started to collaborate on projects. “Moe creates the beats and we create a concept for the hook. We are working on a record and just recently finished a record,” she said.
“Trill Season”, Amour’s first mixtape, will be released in the Spring. “All of the songs are complete, but I’m in the process of figuring out which of the 25 tracks will be put on it. I think there will be around 9 tracks total,” Amour told our TapSongz Team. In 2015, Che’ hopes to expand her audience so more people will have the opportunity to listen to her music. It has also been a long time dream for Amour to get signed by a label, even if it is independent.
Even when attending shows, Amour is constantly watching what other artists are doing and learning every bit of the way. “I went to a Dom Kennedy show and was in awe. I am always studying what artists are doing on stage,” Amour said. When asked if there is an artist that Che’ hopes to collaborate with in the future, she did not hesitate, answered “Brandy! I saw her show and was in shock. She was amazing and it really opened my eyes.”
