Playing in front of a sold out Washington DC crowd on a holiday weekend, Tennessee rock band Colony House did not disappoint.
The four-piece band, named for an apartment complex in Franklin, Tennessee, where each member lived at some point, livened up an excited and packed crowd at the Rock and Roll Hotel. The music video to “You & I” opens with lead singer Caleb Chapman introducing his fellow band members: Scott Mills on guitar, Parke Cotrell (the newest member) on bass, and his own brother Will Chapman on drums. When asked in the video’s introductory interview “What’s it like being in a band with your brother?” Chapman deflected – “We’ll just – we’ll just skip that question.”
Either this was a joke or a reference to some subliminal tension; regardless, the charisma between the guys on stage was obvious. All four band members head-banged with the chords on “You & I” and “You Know It”, the lead singles off upcoming album Only the Lonely, set to be released in January.
Breakout single “Silhouettes”, which hung as the most downloaded song on SiriusXM Alt Nation for weeks after its 2014 release, was met with enthusiastic shouts from audience members who screamed every word. “Second Guessing Games”, the closest to a true ballad on the indie rock trio’s set list, was led in with a drawn out intro; front man Caleb Chapman locked eyes with fans down in front for each repetition of tagline “if only – if only I”. The band’s self-described “rock with stripped-down instruments” style was most evident on punchy “Waiting For My Time To Come” which featured gentle strums of the lead guitar along with snaps and claps from band members and audience members alike.
Definitely check out Colony House’s remaining fall tour dates if you’re interested in an indie rock group that knows how to keep a huge audience engaged while singing about real heart-wrenching situations. Their show was entertaining as it was fulfilling, and the band’s ability to raise the audience’s energy level even beyond where it started was truly impressive. Look out for their new album in January!
