I’ve almost assumed an identity at shows: Guy who arrives early to the show because he fears being late. I’m also “Guy who waits about an hour for the doors to actually open.” My night consisted of reliving my days of working for an event team. I observed as Coda’s crew prepared for the night, making friends with the event staff as time passed.
The night offered vibes of all sorts. The opening act presented an experimental taste that mixed popular songs with his own electronic twist, prepared with visuals to accompany. The following act brought their own crowd. A circle, or mob, danced to the beat and sung to the words. The group appeared to be of early-college age. their dance style gave them away as I made my assumption: a lot of hand work with very little foot work, and I could see my freshman self performing the same at their age. But I hold a bit of bias towards my skill.
Cosmo’s Midnight is Cosmo and Patrick Liney. The Australian duo pair cheery beats with a touch of electronic. A grain of salt. No real inclusion overplayed and overrated of wubs, dubs, and screeches, just how I like it. The dancer inside you is summoned at first listen. I was just busy taking photos; otherwise, I would have destroyed the physical proof of my own dancing.
At any rate, Cosmo’s Midnight delivered a performance that captivated a crowd that was really there to see the previous act. Also, it was a Tuesday night. It takes a bit of showmanship to hold my attention for an otherwise unintended party night. Cosmo’s Midnight is not loud vocally, but musically they just about required me to wear ear plugs. Silent for the majority of their set, they let the music do the talking. One twin on the boards, the other keeping beat with a drum stick as his weapon of choice.
My favorite part of Cosmo’s Midnight had to be their repertoire of original content. They’ve been around since 2013 with their EP Surge and just recently released “History” this year. A song that had just about everyone in the venue singing. I did too…sorry for the lack of restraint.
My previous impression was that this community was generally very remix-heavy. Cosmo’s Midnight exhibited their entire catalog last night, all original tracks. The proof: they admitted they really had no more music to perform for an encore that the audience begged them for. Ironically, they chose crowd favorite “Snare” to finish the show. What they lack in terms of quantity of music, they absolutely make up for in adept music production.
Check these guys out, and check the box for “Music that will get you out on a Tuesday night,” as told by the “Guy who doesn’t listen to EDM but would approve.”
