New York City trio Dreamers put on a fantastic show in front of a sold out crowd at DC’s Rock and Roll Hotel this past weekend.
Self-described as a “cosmic rock” band, the group – consisting of Nick Wold (vocals/guitar), Nelson (bass/vocals) and Jacob Wick (drums) – focuses on smart pop in their its full length LP, “This Album Does Not Exist,” released this summer.
In a cool follow up to the group’s 2015 EP, You Are Here, their new music demonstrates both the depth of the group’s talent and the growth of the band as a whole. Vocally, these songs move beyond classic themes of girls and drugs; musically, it aims for a better synthesis of rock and pop, reminding the crowd that the up-and-coming band can put out hits that can compete with those of established and successful indie rock groups; indeed, their “Sweet Disaster” broke into the top 15 on SiriusXM AltNation list this week.
Throughout the show Wold flaunted his impressive vocal range, sprinkling enthusiastic shouts and crowd-urging gestures throughout his melodies, in which he hit every note with incredible precision. The crowd went particularly wild for new songs “Sweet Disaster” and “Wolves (You Got Me)”. “Never Too Late to Dance”, punched by a rhythmic beat and enhanced by stage lights, demonstrates the greatest potential to match former Dreamers hit “Savoir Adore” in expansive popularity. They certainly played the part of rock stars seeking to connect with the audience, trading lines on their pop-infused sound byte chorus lines and maintaining eye contact with fans in front.
Dreamers is set to play with The Mowgli’s for the next few weeks before linking up with Great Good Fine Ok for a suite of shows through the end of November. This two-pronged tour features stops throughout Texas, California, and all the way down the east coast. Definitely check out Dreamers as they continue to push the boundaries of pop rock.
