“Everything is made up as we go. It’s all spontaneous. I hear it in my head and it’s all on the fly.” This is something most music lovers have a tough time understanding, but Jason Hann from the electronic duo EOTO finds it completely normal. It all started when Jason would fly to Colorado to stay at his friend Michael Travis’ place where they would play with a band back in 2004. “We would just jam on random instruments we had from 10pm until 4 or 5 in the morning,” Hann recalled. The two eventually branched off of their band and began focusing on creating electronic music. The dubstep duo began doing something that no other DJ had done before. Improvise. Their group, EOTO, took off by creating nasty remixes and throwing together music all on the go.
Hann always had a love for creating music spontaneously. He enjoyed live instruments and had a passion for EDM music. Travis had previously been in a three-person band where they made everything up on the fly. The theme for EOTO was simple, but much tougher than the average music fan would expect. “When we first started, we had hand signals for the style of music that we wanted to do,” Hann said. But the electronic duo has come a long way since they first began performing and no longer use hand signals.
EOTO has taken off since the two men joined forces in a one of a kind improvisation group. They have done over 800 shows together at a variety of jam and EDM festivals. While the guys have toured all over the United States, Hann has one festival that always stands out. “I love playing at Shambhala in Canada. We have played at a stage called ‘The Village’ and it has the most amazing sound and clarity live. It’s surrounded by wooden walkways and they get DJ’s from all over the world,” Hann told our TapSongz Team. Shambhala is a festival where Bassnectar really broke through, playing at a small 200 person stage.
While EOTO’s music is all made up on the fly, the group still has produced a variety of albums so far in their career. But the albums are improved in a different way. Hann and Travis both sit down and listen to their live music, particularly looking for themes that last about 12 minutes in length. They then take the best 4-6 minutes of each section and make sure that the sound quality is up to par. “It’s nice to have something out that’s pristine. But it’s been a crazy year and it’s not always intriguing to create an album and spend weeks on making it,” Hann said. The electronic duo absolutely loves touring and hopes to be able to get out in the world more in the future. Their goal is to continue doing what they love and reach a whole new level of people with their music.
While Hann and Travis make their act look easy, it’s a task they have put countless hours into to perfect. “We still get people saying is it all really improvised live? It’s always a challenge but makes us stand out,” Hann said. “We’re experiencing it along with them.” We encourage all of our viewers to give EOTO a listen on SoundCloud and check out their social media below so you don’t miss the latest releases from the electronic duo!
