A Monday night Halloween didn't keep the ghouls and ghosts of San Francisco from putting on their dancing shoes and heading over to Mezzanine to see the electronic producer Giraffage. Following a sensual and soulful bass-dominated set by XXYYXX, Giraffage hopped on stage sporting a Cub Scout uniform.
The costume couldn't be more appropriate for the Bay Area native as he jumped around on stage to his own synth pop and bubblegum trap like a little kid. It’s difficult to restrict Giraffage to a single genre. The audience members clearly enjoyed the numerous varied aspects of his show, but everyone at Mezzanine could agree upon one thing: Giraffage knows how to throw a party.
Opening with Gessafelsteins' "Hate or Glory," Giraffage broke the R&B hypnotic spell cast by XXYYXX and set the mood for the night: it’s Halloween and we’re going to have some fun. The defining trait of Giraffage’s unique set is his ability to integrate throwback favorites into his own catalog and apply new twists for each show. It takes a special performer to turn Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Goin Down” into a trap bounce party anthem. The night was full of these crowd pleasers including remixes of Ginuwine’s “Pony” blended into Kanye’s “Bound 2” and Drake’s “Hotline Bling” paired with an instrumental glitch hop sample of the iPhone default ringtone.
Giraffage took this opportunity to debut his new single, “Bring Me Your Love (feat. THEA).” This is his first solo release since his No Reason EP release on Fool’s Gold Records, the heavy-hitting label with a roster that ranges from RL Grime to Chromeo. This new single showcases Giraffage’s flourishing production talent; in it he exhibits mastery of the 808 by pairing lifelike jungle sounds and his signature drum loops with the airy falsetto of THEA.
Technically his set began at 12:30am, so Giraffage made the club go up on a Tuesday. Those at work are probably feeling it… without a single regret.
