We had the fantastic opportunity to interview Academy, one of our favorite new artists. Consisting of Evan Walsh and Eli Brown, Academy has been busy cranking out new and unique music that has recently garnered interest from many around the industry. Both Walsh and Brown grew up in East Greenwich, Rhode Island and possess a tremendous passion for creating music that is truly unique and of outstanding quality. In regards to their inspiration behind their music, Academy stated, “We’re talking James Taylor to Blink 182, Bob Marley to Pete Seeger, Jack Johnson to Jurassic 5”. One of our favorite songs of Academy’s is entitled “Catch My Vibe”, which has heavy notes of tropical influence, primarily due to the guitar being very prominent in the song, an instrument that Brown has been playing for years. Many of Academy’s songs have a very laidback vibe to them, which make them perfect tunes to bump this summer.
Academy has put a massive amount of work into their music and their efforts have paid off. All of their songs have at least 100,000 plays on SoundCloud and the group is just about to hit one million total! “So far we’ve released 5 singles, four 4 of those will be on an EP we are releasing on June 24, 2014,” Academy said Academy. This new EP is entitled “Moving Methods”, and should be on everyone’s radar as its release date quickly approaches. Their newest single, called “This View” was met with overwhelming success, attaining more than 30,000 plays during its first week.
Many of Academy’s songs do have “rapping” in them, but both Walsh and Brown do not consider themselves to be rappers. “We wouldn’t want to try and say we sound like anyone else, hopefully what comes out is a giant mix of everything we love to listen to and are inspired by,” Academy told our team. Here at TapSongz, we truly believe that Academy is bound to breakthrough onto the big stage, and we think that will happen sooner rather than later. There is no current artist that can match this dynamic duo’s distinctive blend of unique and great music. “When we were both about 12 years old we’d write and record songs with our voices pitched super high and low, so I guess technically that was the first version of Academy,” Walsh and Brown said. They have certainly come a remarkably long way since that first version of Academy. The group has been able to successfully craft a style and sound that enables them to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. We hope you enjoyed this TapSongz feature article as we continue finding tomorrow’s greatest music today!
