Kongos performed at 9:30 Club in Washington DC on February 10th as part of its first headlining tour, Lunatic.
The sold out show was unbelievable.
Both opening acts were fantastic. Colony House front man Caleb Chapman was endearing and genuine as he acknowledged the drummer – his brother – twice during their set and fondly referred to his band as “the friend that came with a friend.” Sir Sly was unique and boisterous, wowing the crowd with hits “Ghost” and “You Haunt Me” before absolutely shutting down the club with closer “Gold.”
Alternative rock/kwaito band Kongos put on an outstanding set including hits “Sex on the Radio” and “I Want to Know”. Fans went wild for “Come With Me Now.”

The band of four brothers had an incredible stage presence with bassist, drummer and guitar trading lead vocals for various songs. The show featured a couple of accordion solos, showcasing the band’s unique and beachy sound. The stage’s back curtain lifted after the first three songs to reveal changing screens with photos from the musicians’ childhoods, adding to the band’s heartfelt messages.
As headlining band, Kongos was able to play more songs than usual and incorporated new singles and slower ballads into the set list. They performed a fantastic rendition of the Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby featuring a freestyle rap by a member of the band’s crew.
As if the crowd wasn’t already on fire, they shot smoke rings from the stage throughout closer hit “I’m Only Joking.”
The concert was thrilling, exciting and a ton of fun. All three bands played songs that kept the crowd dancing and screaming along throughout the three-hour show. Definitely look out for Kongos on their Lunatic tour from now until March 14th!
