Krewella has had a rocky road of the past couple of years, but the duo has stayed true to their music. Having done international tours, rocking college campuses and selling out stadiums, Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf have been doing things different recently. The popular EDM sisters had ditched their label and sought out to do music just the way they like: their own rules, terms and most importantly, their own sound. Our TapSongz Team had the opportunity to see Krewella live earlier this summer in their hometown of Chicago and learned more about Part I of their brand new album, touring, life as an independent artist, and Part II of their album!
The sisters decided that releasing new music was the next step for them earlier this summer, but wanted to spread out the fun, sharing only the first portion of songs on their project "New World". "We wanted to give fans and listeners two pieces of a whole because in this day and age, consuming an entire album in one go is very overwhelming to most people," the sisters told our TapSongz Team. "There was also the thought that since Part I had some songs with a new flavor from us, it hopefully conditioned listeners to hear us in a way they hadn't before and to prepare them for more of that in Part II."
Thus far, "New World Part I" has been a huge success as fans have loved hearing the fresh style of Krewella that they have grown to love. Their creativity and originality is back, with a revamped sound and plenty of energy. The two have had a blast releasing the first part of the album and so far fans have been enjoying the ride. "The response has been amazing! Our fans are so incredible in the fact that they are so open to any direction that we decide to embark in, but I think they also appreciated the fact that we pulled some vibes from our roots back into the project as well. They were so supportive of us using more and more inspiration from our Pakistani background in the music as well," the Yousaf sisters said. With such a warm welcoming from fans it is still up in the air as to when Krewella plans to release the second part of New World. "We're planning on releasing 2-3 standalone tracks before we release Part II. Stay tuned!".
The coolest part of looking back at Krewella's journey is remembering where it all began. The two sisters quit school seven years ago to pursue music. They are ever grateful they took that plunge back in 2010 as it has been some journey since. Just recently, Krewella decided to take matters into their own hands and ditch the typical label that so many artists strive for. They started their own independent label Mixed Kids Records. "We didn't feel like we fit on a major label anymore and when we amicably parted ways with Columbia Records, we were excited to be able to own all of our own music and create our own release schedule," Krewella told our TapSongz Team. "But we also worried because once you don't have a label backing you, you essentially lose all funding, marketing, publicist help, etc. Doing it 'DIY' is the most rewarding, scary shit and we wouldn't have it any other way at this point in our career though."

The girls continue to tour across various countries and venues, both large and small, but have enjoyed every step of the way. "Intimate venues are full of energy that doesn't exist at any other type of show. College shows have always been insane for us as well, though, because there is a certain level of not giving a fuck. The music is loud, the crowd is like one big group of friends, people are faded, and they just want to go as hard as possible when it comes to the music," Krewella said. "Festivals, the biggest shows we play, are always going to be amazing for us though, considering it is almost every artist's dream to stand in front of a crowd of thousands and hear your words being sung back to you and see your music being danced to - physically moving people and driving them to lose themselves in the moment," the sisters added.
The coolest part about seeing Krewella perform this summer was the duo threw an incredible show as if nothing had changed. It was as if the duo hadn't lost their third individual, hadn't moved out of their record Company, and were the same old same old successful EDM act. Playing old tracks including "Alive" and "Somewhere to Run" as well as their new hits off of "New World Part I", fans had a blast seeing an act who grew up only miles away from Spring Awakening in downtown Chicago. "We love our city. No matter where we are in the world, we rep Chicago super hard and Spring Awakening has to be one of the best festivals we've ever played (it was also our first festival booking back in 2012!). This year in June 2017 was our third time back at the festival and probably the best out of all three," the sisters said.
As for the rest of 2017, Krewella is hoping to do exactly what they have been doing: make things exciting. "Our lives are highly unpredictable, but the goals for the rest of 2017 would be to just keep releasing music as we make it and see as many of our Krew on tour as possible". Be sure to support Krewella by checking out their new project "New World Part I"! Be on the lookout for Part II to be released in the coming months! Here at TapSongz, we appreciate your reading this feature article as we continue finding tomorrow's greatest music today!
