Our TapSongz team continues to be on the hunt for rising talent and new artists who are cutting ground with fresh releases. One of our favorite parts about blogging is tracking the success of developing artists over time. We had the opportunity to interview Living in Shadows, an English duo, who released their debut album back in 2021. We recently caught up with the duo to hear about their progress in recent years as well as learn more about their brand new album "Neon Burning"!
Living in Shadows is comprised of award-winning vocalist Zoe Gilby and multi-instrumentalist Andy Champion, from Gateshead, United Kingdom. The duo has found significant success since releasing their debut album and were excited to release another full project for their fans. Commenting on how the group named the new project, Zoe said "It was after composing the track 'Neon Burning' it felt like it epitomized the whole album. That everyone has its life cycle and to use the life cycle of a star felt like an appropriate reference. Neon Burning is also an inspirational line in a Dire Straits track," she added.
The duo released the new project on Lamplight Social Records and were excited about the new collaboration and opportunity. "This is our first time working with the label. We've actually known James (owner) for a number of years as a professional saxophonist and composer that we have collaborated with previously," the duo told our TapSongz Team. What excites the band most about the new project release is the opportunity to perform live, something they were not able to accomplish with their debut release due to the pandemic. "We have our strong A-team live band at the ready to perform this on stage. We are looking at festival billing and hosting our own gigs," Zoe said. We love that artists are finally able to get back to live shows and roadtrip to see their fans and Living in Shadows absolutely deserves the recognition that they've put into their sound in recent years.
Reflecting on style shifts musically, Zoe acknowledged that the duo's sound has continued to evolve. "It's definitely moved to a more progressive direction. It hasn't strayed completely away from the jazz element, but the shifting time signatures and production has certainly given the album a more of a prog. sound," she said. "The songs are more based around painting a picture of endings and new beginnings. Like one door closes and a window opens. The tracks differ in their portrayal of which stage," Zoe added. What we love most about Living in Shadows is the duo's confidence and energy, willingness to evolve and explore new lyrical ideas and the message they want to send to fans. The new album includes eight tracks with the title track 'Neon Burning' being the duo's favorite today. "There is something about the simplicity which is hypnotic. There is a vulnerability attached to it which draws you in," the duo told our TapSongz Team.
The duo spent about six months on the new album and are very pleased with the results. Given it wasn't their first project, Living in Shadows felt much more comfortable and confident in the studio, which we think really shows in the quality of their work. We know many of our readers are looking for new summer jams so look no further than Living in Shadows' brand new album "Neon Burning"! Be sure to give the new project a listen and support the rising duo on Spotify, Deezer, Bandcamp, Apple Music, and iTunes! We enjoyed catching up with Zoe and Andy and already can't wait for additional new releases from Living in Shadows! Here at TapSongz, we thank you for reading this feature article as we continue finding tomorrow's greatest music today!
