As a company dedicated to “the next big thing,” TapSongz invests interests in growing musical trends. House music has grown largely in the 2000’s with Tropical House making a splash primarily two years ago in 2012. Big artists have thrived off of this new relaxing musical sensation. Moreover, artists are now being born into this category. One such artist, Matoma, has shown unique promise through his cover songs.
Matoma calls Norway his home, having been raised in a small town called Flisa near the Swedish border. For those unfamiliar with this area, Flisa is a sparsely human-populated nature haven. The town has a diverse variety of shops on some of its main streets, but the main features of the area are its numerous rivers, dense evergreen forests, and nearby mountains. Matoma recalls, “I spent quite a lot of my childhood enjoying everything you can do in such a place.” It makes sense that his relaxed tropical sound was inspired in such a peaceful natural environment.
At the foundation of Matoma sits a love for the piano. Naturally, a keyboard programs the electronic vibrations that originally emit from his speakers. He added more to his background by saying he had grown up enjoying classic Norwegian romantic music, which is generally comprised of a piano and orchestra, and rock piano as performed by Robert Wells. However, Matoma was a diverse listener because hip-hop was also majorly important. “Artists such as Biggie, Xzibit, 2Pac and DMX were a huge influence in my youth,” he says. This is evident in his work today.
All of Matoma’s works thus far are cover pieces of hip-hop and R&B. He has taken his topical sounds and infused them into the lyrics of others. These covers end up different than most covers that you would imagine. “My remixes are almost original tracks. I don’t use anything from the original track, except for the vocals.” He is also a big fan of the saxophone sound, which gives his music an extra unique twist that is easy to identify. The result is a new blend of sounds that incorporate different melodies to each original song, but the sounds will leave you in a recliner chair with your eyes closed and your head bobbing.
Some of Matoma’s feedback has been negative from people who do not wish to accept anything but the original. However, other critics mention that even if you like the original song, you can still love Matoma’s work. Additionally, he is in the process of formulating plans to create original tracks with talented singers.
When asked what made his genre and music special, Matoma responded, “I think it is the combination of that perfect relaxing tempo, combined with sounds that gives us a smile on our face.” So far, his performances have only spanned across Norway. Nevertheless, his dream is to produce and perform music for a living. With his upcoming tour, his talent, and the rising popularity of his genre, his performances are sure to cover more ground in the near future.
Overall, Matoma’s music reflects his personality. When talking about himself, he mentions, “Meeting new people and making new friends is a huge part of who I am.” He is the kind of guy that wants to interact with people, both through honest sincerity and through music. “Music can be a tool for meditating your mind, in addition to being a tool for human interaction.” Clearly, this artist is one to look into, both for his genuine character and his grooving sounds.
