Here at TapSongz, we have been conducting research in the music industry to find talented up and coming artists from all genres! This week we came across Matt U Johnson, a young artist out of Staten Island, New York. Our TapSongz team was able to get the latest from rising artist in our exclusive interview.
With roots in Jamaica and America, Matt U Johnson is able to combine Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Reggae to create a unique sound. Growing up in New York City, he fell in love with music at an early age. “Being a mix of two cultures broadened my international taste for different styles of music, from the likes of Bob Marley, Sting, Busta Rhymes, Usher, and much more,” Johnson told our TapSongz team.
Johnson turned his passion for music into a singer/songwriter career that is starting to take off. He began writing his own music at the age of 13 and started singing and doing live venues at the age of 14 in New York City. In recent months, Johnson has been working on a new EP titled “Never Give Up”, which will come out sometime this year. Some singles are already available on iTunes and other digital stores all over the web. He is excited about the new EP and several media sites have covered the upcoming release already. “I am featured in a few magazines all over the country this month, which includes City Beat Magazine, One West Magazine, and Scope Magazine for my upcoming releases,” Johnson said.
Despite having such a young career, Johnson has already made strides with making connections within the industry. “I have met some awesome people on my promotional tours, my favorite being Wyclef Jean,” Johnson said. So far in his short career, Johnson has opened up for Def Jam artist Mann as well as Ca$h Out! While Johnson has already accomplished a lot, he has his sights set on the future. “My future goals are to release a full LP and build my brand as an artist to bring my talent to the next level,” he said.
Johnson has kept extremely busy with producing music in the studio, but he keeps occupied with several other hobbies outside of work. “Besides my music, I am an actor and model. I have modeled for Wilhelmina models for Mercedes Benz fashion week and currently I have a National Army commercial playing on T.V. called Army Mentality,” Johnson said.
