Being 17 years old can mean many things to different people. Most 17-year-olds are learning to drive, searching for their first job or spending their nights trying to understand geometry against their will. For Maya Payne, however, being seventeen involves writing songs, producing tracks, performing live and finishing her much-anticipated EP.
Payne is an electronic singer-songwriter from Christchurch, New Zealand. Payne produces her own songs, with a musical style similar to Banks. She has came a long way since her first single “Fragile,” developing her own sound and performing her music live.
Payne has been writing music since she was a young child.
“I wrote my first song when I was 11. I have been singing since I was really young and have always wanted a career in music. I produced my first track when I was 16 and have been writing and producing new songs since.”
While many teenagers dream of making it big in the music industry, Payne has already had impressive success. Her most recent single “If Only” has made it on Spotify’s “New Music Tuesday” playlist with over 200,000 streams.
“My goals were to make a fun, unique and modern track,” said Payne regarding her latest single. “I just wanted to experiment and make a track that was different and something I loved.”
In 2015, Payne plans to finish her EP and hopes to make some music videos for her new songs. Her career goals currently include performing in either New York or Paris, and collaborating with Ellie Goulding.
“Ellie Goulding has always been a massive inspiration to me since I was younger. I love how unique she is and her songwriting.”
As Payne continues to blossom, it will be interesting to see where her goals take her. Regardless of her age, Payne has already produced some astounding tracks. However, being only 17, Payne has a lot of time to develop. Her well-established background in production and performance will undoubtedly aid her as she strives to make a career with her music.
