Just a few months after a rocking show at Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club in October, Mura Masa came back again last night to put on a DJ set at the electronic music nightclub, Flash. DC welcomed him with open arms: the show sold out online quickly and Flash didn’t even sell tickets at the door as planned.
The 21-year-old Guernsey-born Mura Masa is best known for his song “Love$ick”, which features ASAP Rocky and reached the Spotify Viral charts in both the UK and US. Mura Masa’s debut album was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2017; he is the first artist to be nominated as both a musician and creative director.
Mura Masa came onstage around 12:30 am and was greeted by a packed club. The second floor of the club was filled to the brim with sweaty, eager fans. He started his show strong by playing some of his electronic pop hits which the crowd could easily bop to. However, when he moved on to playing hip hop tunes and grime, the audience was at a loss. It wasn’t quite what I expected him to play, and I think the rest of the audience had a similar response: the fans closest to me were clearly confused as they struggled to dance to the rap tracks, which were mostly filled with fast lyrics. It was a surprising choice to say the least – so much rap is rarely performed at Flash, where the audience is used to techno and electronic dance music.
Mura Masa tried to finish strong by playing my personal favorite, “Lotus Eater”, twice at 2am, but by that time some of the audience had already left. I personally am a huge fan of Mura Masa’s original tracks, so I was slightly disappointed that it took him so long to play his usual music – his hits are popular, as was overly evidenced by the fast-selling tickets and energetic fans. Despite this set, I would definitely encourage you to check out his music on SoundCloud and Spotify as he’s a very talented artist.
