Without an introduction, guitarist Brandon Yangmi began the show with a fast-paced strum that climaxed with the lead singer, Addie Sartino, running on stage and jumping into the first song, “Naive.” Addie, dressed in pink star sunglasses and a denim overall dress, danced all around the stage and near the end of the song she jumped on the drum set and hit a few beats. Her bubbling energy resonated with the crowd as we danced and sang along.
The Greeting Committee consists of four friends that started playing together in 2014 while they were still in high school in Kansas. Since then they have released two EPs, It’s Not All That Bad (2015) and Meeting People Is Easy (2017).
The band played at The Sinclair in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Wednesday night, opening for Misterwives. The venue was a smaller space, holding around 200 people with a large overhead balcony space. The crowd consisted mainly of young people in their early 20s - excited to be distinguished from the younger attendees by a yellow wristband and an alcoholic drink in hand. However, there were a handful of older women who jammed out with the band and sang along with every song even more passionately.
The band’s indie-pop style with high-speed beats from drummer Austin Fraser and bright electric guitar riffs from Brandon made for an addicting sound that had the whole audience dancing. During “Dancing To Nothing At All” Brandon walked to the edge of the stage, turned his back to the crowd, and fell. Luckily, the crowd caught him and he surfed the audience as he played his guitar solo - which he absolutely crushed, even while moving over the top of crowd.
However, one crowdsurf was not enough for the band. During the last song, “Hands Down,” Addie fell back just as Brandon had and the audience moved her effortlessly. People seemingly knew when to bring her back to the stage and Brandon and Pierce Turcotte, the bassist, pulled her up by her arms. She addressed her denim dress by jokingly telling the audience, “I have spandex on, it’s okay.”
The Greeting Committee worked the crowd amazingly - not only incorporating us through the music but actually joining us, making for an exceptionally entertaining show. This rising band is certainly worth checking out!
