The Griswolds played an energized show this Saturday at the sold-out Foundry in Philadelphia. The Foundry is The Fillmore’s upstairs bar-lounge and offers an intimate concert setting. But don’t be deceived: the spacious layout still allows plenty of room for foot stomping, clapping, and even full-fledged dancing.
The show was kicked off by openers DREAMERS. I’ve had my eye on DREAMERS since this past summer and the group didn’t disappoint. Their aggressive sound was even more evident live than on recording, especially in songs like “DRUGS”, “Sweet Disaster”, and “Wolves (You Got Me).” DREAMERS were an excellent segue to The Griswolds.
All the way from Sydney, Australia, The Griswolds sprinkled new tracks from their second album High Times For Low Lives, released this past November, among their old hits. Though the audience responded enthusiastically to the songs from the newer album, they went especially ballistic for the songs from the band’s first album, Be Impressive (2015). Songs like “Be Impressive”, “Down And Out”, and my personal favorite “Beware The Dog” brought out scream-along audience participation.
The sold-out audience drank up the band’s infectious energy and danced along through the entire show. The band also played a “happy birthday” sing-along mid-performance for their drummer, whose birthday was the day of the concert. The group cleverly followed this celebration with their own song “Birthday”. The Griswolds engaged with the audience from start to finish and emphasized the crowd as the focus of the show: the band worked to ensure that everyone in attendance had a great time. Lead singer Christopher Whitehall expressed his gratitude between songs, thanking the audience for their support and for giving the band the opportunity to live their dream.
The Griswolds closed the show with a surprise cover of OutKast’s “Hey Ya”, inviting the opening band DREAMERS on stage for a joint performance. Needless to say, the audience went nuts. Definitely check out The Griswolds and DREAMERS on the rest of their tour!
