The smooth strings and soft vocals from The Native Sibling’s new album will throw goose bumps down your arms. Featuring a mellow acoustic sound, the brother and sister out of Santa Cruz shared their thoughts on their recent album release and plans for the future.
Growing up, the Williams siblings were never on the same page regarding musical taste. Ryan was always a fan of hard rock and punk bands, while Kaylee enjoyed country and softer music. It wasn’t until about three years ago that the two decided to join forces and bring their musical talents together. “Kaylee was in Ireland through a foreign exchange program and we met up for a week. We played cover songs at local pubs and got great responses,” Ryan recalled. While they had previously never bonded musically, both Ryan and Kaylee Williams decided to try writing songs after performing in Ireland.
The two siblings began creating music and formed two EP projects, both of which consisted of only a handful of songs. The Native Sibling recently made a bigger splash in the singer-songwriter scene by releasing their debut album “Letters Kept To Ourselves”, which has received rave reviews thus far. “Every song on the album we wrote as a co-write,” Ryan said. “One of us would start writing a song, get it halfway and we would finish the song together. We each started writing about half of the songs.”
The Native Sibling wrote about 30 songs for the project and sent them to a producer. They eventually met up with Daniel Mendez, a strong producer who had previously worked on Noah Gundersen’s record. Ryan and Kaylee moved out to Brooklyn for two months to work with Mendez on the record. “It was just the three of us the entire time. Daniel ran everything behind the scenes. He had some great ideas and kept the artistic flows alive,” Ryan told our TapSongz Team. At this point in their career, The Native Sibling remains independent, but both musicians are not opposed to a label in the future.
“Letters Kept To Ourselves” was released in late June and consisted of 10 tracks. Our TapSongz Team particularly enjoys “Carry You” and “Right Here for You” so be sure to check out both tracks on iTunes and SoundCloud! “My favorite tracks to play live are probably ‘Evening’s Wake’ and ‘Oh, Sing,” Ryan said. While the Williams siblings have really enjoyed the progress that they have made in recent months, they are already planning for the future. The Native Sibling will be touring through the first half of the year and hope to play as many shows as they can.
