Will Eastman, the DJ, music producer, and phenom based in Washington, DC, released his third album “Hilo” on March 7. The album, complete with 8 songs, offers listeners 46 minutes of electronic artistry.
The album’s creative lyrics and profound backstory, however, beg the listener to play the album end-to-end through headphones on full volume in isolation on repeat. “Hilo” is all about transformation as it captures Will’s journey as he discovered he was adopted. Will goes beyond allowing us to experience his trauma: he invites us to recognize our own crises and embrace the unknown through his album.
The album’s third track “Million” introduces a haunting tone as the featured vocalist, Ameer Dyson, repeats beating lyrics, just slightly above a whisper. The changing percussion and speed throughout the song bring Will’s intensely emotional journey to life. Highs and lows seem to be a motif in “Hilo,” demonstrated in an abrupt change in speed, and increase in volume, and the progressive incorporation of new percussion, particularly in “Waiting To Leave New York” and “Limitless.”
“Hilo” is a very versatile album; we’re confident it will be enjoyed by listeners in numerous scenarios and locations. With a captivating array of sounds and steady beats, “Hilo” can be played aloud on speakers to a room packed with 500 people or in a small group setting where it provides the foundation for good conversation with friends. Collaborations with multiple artists create a new atmosphere within each track, drawing the listener in every time.
Will is truly a unique and talented artist - and this is evidenced by his creation of a beautiful and inspired piece of art from a single, earth-shattering truth. Check out "Hillo" on iTunes and Spotify - it's absolutely worth the listen. And check out the schedule at his own U Street Music Hall in Washington, DC!
