2020 has been a crazy year for artists, but many are pushing on to express themselves and release new music. Our team recently came across Alastair Goodland, an incredible folk singer-songwriter with an impeccable sound. Our TapSongz Team had the opportunity to interview Alastair to hear more about his inspirations growing up, his latest album, and plans for the future!
Alastair is an international artist with such a cool upbringing. "I live in New Zealand and have done since I was five years of age. I moved here with my parents when my dad was recruited by the New Zealand police," he told our TapSongz Team. Alastair loved music at a young age, but really started to get serious about it in his 30's and 40's. "In my 40's I started doing the cover band thing, playing clubs, pubs, and weddings. But covers ain't where it's at and I wanted to perform my own stuff," Alastair added. It is so cool to see Alastair create his own unique sound, but it didn't come without inspiration. "I loved Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, Led Zepplin, Dire Straits, and stuff like that," he said.
Fast forward to today and Alastair has made strides of his own releasing a brand new album "Look Upon the Cross". "It is a collection of songs written over a number of years, some written quite recently. I left the cover band scene and decided it was time to stop messing around. I also felt the Lord calling me away from that lifestyle," Alastair said. We absolutely loved the 12-track album as it was done extremely well.
The first track "Look Upon the Cross", the title of the album, is beautifully done with smooth guitar to open up the song. Alastair's vocals and lyrics are a perfect fit for the well-crafted acoustic tune. Our TapSongz team also loved the tune "12,000 Miles 50 Years". Alastair's voice is perfectly displayed over the beautiful song which includes light guitar and flute. The track was done extremely well and we already can't wait to hear more new tunes from Alastair. His 12-track album is well worth your time so be sure and give it a listen below as well as on SoundCloud!
Thus far, Alastair has toured locally in New Zealand. "I had flights booked to Scotland just before the Corona Virus happened. I was due to play two venues in Scotland and England. I have a tentative booking for Samoa in November of this year, but I don't know," he said. Alastair is already thinking ahead after releasing this first amazing album. "I'm going to do my album release concert, and then look at taking the album to the rest of New Zealand. In September, I start recording album number two - Who do you say that I am?". We already can't wait for Alastair's second album as it'll be a real treat this fall!
Be sure to give Alastair Goodland's music a listen on SoundCloud as you will not be disappointed. Follow him on Twitter to stay up to date with his latest projects and releases. We already can't wait to hear what the talented singer-songwriter's second album if it is even half as good as the first!
