The dynamic Nashville duo of Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber wowed the crowd Friday night with a great performance at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. The electro-indie group combines pop and funk to produce upbeat dance music that puts listeners in the groove. The pair is promoting their upcoming album, Bleed Gold and Piss Excellence, set to be released on October 14th.
After playing an hour-and-a-half long exhaustive set, the band left and returned to the stage for a three-song encore at the crowd’s urging. They closed with their most popular single, Doses & Mimosas, which climbed up to number 23 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and 43 on the Rock Airplay chart in 2014.
Lead singer and guitarist Jason Huber dragged out the last song before Doses & Mimosas and asked the crowd at one point, “You want me to shut up now, right?” The unanimous “Yes!” was evidence that the audience was dying to hear their most well-known single, and the duo did not disappoint. When the song came on, the crowd was enthused and danced until the very last beat.
Dressed in jorts (cut off jean shorts), retro mid-calf socks, a white shirt and a black cap, singer and bass guitarist Jordan Kelley exuded the aura of a modern-day rock star. Huber sported a cut-off black tank emblazoned with the white 9:30 Club title of the venue, black jeans and an all-natural gusto mustache. Despite their differing fashion tastes, the two complemented each other very well. They met while studying music production at Middle Tennessee State University and started making music together two years ago.
Cherub did toe the line between flaunting their talent and needlessly lengthening a set, occasionally losing audience interest as the riffs dragged select songs out for nearly seven minutes. For a group with such a solid fan base and a successful music portfolio, this seemed unnecessary – but could easily be resolved by adding a couple more (regular length) songs to the set list.
The show consisted of a mix of old and new music, as well as several guitar solos and battles between Kelley and Huber. As the two rocked out with each other onstage, the emotions in the pit continued to rise: throughout the night, the band consistently thanked the crowd for the great energy in the hall.
Overall, the band’s enthusiasm and performance made the show very enjoyable. Definitely check out Cherub’s new album in mid-October and follow their social media accounts!
