Our TapSongz Team searches for up and coming artists each and every day who display the talent and potential needed in order to make strides within the music industry. We recently came across Coines and Student 1, a producer and rapper duo whose styles effortlessly mesh together to bring something fresh to the table. We had the chance to catch up with the guys regarding their latest releases and see what their big plans were for the future.
Student 1 was born in Maryland but moved to Minneapolis at a young age, where he ultimately met Coines. The two began experimenting with different sounds and started to collaborate more with new project ideas. "I remember seeing a video that went viral through our high school- of 'some kid' passing out in the crowd during Kendrick at SoundSet 2012. I later found out it was Student 1." Coines laughingly told our TapSongz Team. "I had a party one night and he came through, once it cleared out the few dudes left started freestyling. That was the first time we met and we haven't looked back since."
To avoid confusion, Coines is the producer of the crew while Student 1 does the rapping. They feed off of each others vibe effortlessly, enabling the perfect environment for them to create music worth listening to. "Skrillex and Porter Robinson are the sole reason why I wanted to start producing music in high school," Coines recalls. Meanwhile, Student 1 credits Eyedea and MF Doom for being the catalyst to his interest in Hip-Hop. "Lupe Fiasco is up there too. And I loved old Atmosphere with a fiery passion that consumed my soul," Student 1 said.
Our TapSongz Team loves the track "Switch 1", which can be heard below and was recently released by the duo on SoundCloud. The beats are catchy and Student 1 raps flawlessly throughout the entire track. The switch-up is unexpected yet incredibly satisfying. "Coines does most of the mixing and mastering to the final tracks as well as all of our promotion," Student 1 told our TapSongz Team. All of their music is listed under Coines' SoundCloud, as they hope to build up a strong following under one name.
The guys also dropped a more funky tune "Eazy", which features an infectious dance beat and crisp rapping by Student 1. It's the perfect track to either throw on and vibe out to or to get people moving. The guys have big plans for the future and look forward to building up their fan base. "We're making arrangements to start performing at more local events. We haven't done that yet so we're hoping to gain some more traction and grow our fan base by being more prominent in our local scene," Coines said. Student 1 has participated in several open mic nights, but the guys are looking to create some more momentum locally before moving onto bigger ideas.
'Memoman,' their upcoming release, is due for release July 13th.
We encourage all of our viewers to give Coines and Student 1's music a listen on SoundCloud as you will not be disappointed. It is always fun to see a strong collaboration and the guys truly fuse their talents together so well. Toss them a follow on SoundCloud to stay up to date with their latest releases and new projects!
