Cold War Kids played a fantastic set at the DC 101 Kerfuffle at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland last weekend. The group took the stage in front of a packed General Admission and seated pavilion area, surrounded on all sides by eager fans embracing the lawn in true festival sentiment.
The indie rock band from California includes Nathan Willet (vocals, piano, guitar), Matt Maust (bass guitar), David Quon (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew Schwartz (backing vocals, keyboards, piano, percussion) and Joe Plummer (drums, percussion). The band played straight through their hour-long set, paying special attention to lengthy guitar and bass solos, piano riffs and punctuated drum sequences.
The high-energy opening segment started with “All This Could Be Yours” before moving into “Miracle Mile”, which saw Willet and Quon play to all sides of the stage, quickly pushing fans to dance and sing along. The energy continued through “Audience” and “Hospital Beds”.
“We Used To Vacation There” featured a beautiful acoustic drop on the chorus, highlighting Willet’s gentle touch on the piano, accented only by the occasional regularized bass or snare drum before building back into a guitar solo to lead into the verse.
Crowd favorites included hits off their new album, “Hot Coals” and “First”, the latter of which introduced the closing three songs. Mid-set they performed the high-energy staple “Hang Me Out To Dry” through which the energy in the venue skyrocketed.
Be sure to check out Cold War Kids as the band performs at various festivals and single shows through October!
