While 2020 has been such a difficult year for many, it has been a privilege to see so many artists press on and release new music for their fans. Our TapSongz Team continues to search for talented up and coming artists. One such artist we recently came across is Deon Powter, who immediately caught our attention. We had the opportunity to interview Powter to learn more about his inspirations, latest releases, and plans for the future!
Powter is originally from Parkes, a small town about 226 miles west of Sydney, Australia. He remembers loving music early on in his upbringing. "I first felt like I needed to play guitar when I watched Back to the Future. I played air guitar with Marty when he rocked a killer Johnny B Goode. I realized I wanted to play guitar when the song had finished and I was way out of breath," he said. Growing up, Deon had plenty of influences as well. "When I had enough money to buy my first cassette it was going to be either Stevie Ray Vaughn's In Step or 26 country classics. My brother bought me a double cassette of Eric Clapton's Ocean Boulevard 461 and Slowhand. I followed Eric Clapton's career from then on," he told our TapSongz Team.
Fast forward to today and Deon has used these influences to generate his own creative and unique sounds. "With my new release 'How It Feels', I tracked the vocal guitar and bass parts in my garage at home with logic, then posted a rough music video on socials as a tester. A producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Nick O-Donnell (from Make Music Not War) got in touch after seeing it on Instagram and said he'd be interested to produce the track," Powter said. Deon has been able to work with Nick on multiple songs and the two have clicked.
Deon released a new track "Closer" which we absolutely loved. The vibe is throwback, but the lyrics and songwriting are so modern. We think Deon nailed the electric sound that will give you goosebumps. Our TapSongz Team also loved "How It Feels", which has a more laidback indie vibe. It is always amazing to see artists such as Deon be able to pull off such striking versatility between different songs and we love what he was able to accomplish. Powter certainly understands the intricacies of music and has an amazing ear for strong sounds and good guitar. We were impressed with his hard rock and soft indie vibes and can't wait to hear more. The artist has certainly progressed a great amount from his first solo EP "Time To Be Human" to his latest project slated to be released October 17th.
Deon has been able to play a lot with his brother, something we thought was really cool. "Our voices blend really well together and we've played together for many years. We know each other's songs and we're great friends. It's so exciting to play with someone when you know what they're able to do," Powter told our TapSongz Team.
