We had the opportunity to recently interview a musician who aims to combine both singing and rapping into his songs. Donny Ray, out of Phoenix, Arizona, aims to implement both of these elements into his unique style of music. Ray explained that early on in his career, he focused mainly on rapping, but he later incorporated singing into his routine. “I started off rapping at first, but as time went on people would tell me how they loved and wanted to hear me sing more, so I slowly began to sing more,” he said. Ray has had many musical influences in his life, which include Michael Jackson, Eminem and Kanye West. In our exclusive interview with him, Ray stated that Lauryn Hill was possibly his biggest influence. “Lauryn Hill was the first artist I recall hearing the rap/singing approach which allowed me to embody both styles. Each can evoke a different emotion for people so that’s why I really enjoy it,” Ray said. By using both styles in his music, Ray believes that he can connect to a far greater array of listeners. This unique sound allows Ray to stand out amongst other aspiring hip-hop artists, and could potentially enable him to have a tremendous impact in the industry.
Donny Ray has been busy in the studio, as he has released numerous mixtapes throughout the last couple of years. His latest EP, entitled “Transit To Nowhere”, is perhaps his most successful project to date. Ray said that the EP “sparked a good buzz for me”, and allowed for his music to gain more recognition in the hip-hop community. Ray has released four mixtapes in the last three years, which exemplifies how determined he truly is. Although he is relatively new to the rap game, Donny Ray has already worked with some pretty heavy hitters, such as Fabolous, Willy Northpole and Dom Kennedy. Ray recently released a new music video for his song, “Supernatural Love” and also a new single entitled “Dope Chick”, which can be downloaded on his Soundcloud.

Ray believes that he can truly connect with people through his music, which he thinks is the best aspect of creating music.
