Performing in the Twin Cities is nothing new for American Singer-Songwriter Eric Hutchinson. The talented artist attended the Basilica Block Party in Minneapolis this past Friday night, an event that he is all too familiar with. “I’ve played the Twin Cities more than anywhere else so I’d always heard about the epic, mythic Basilica Block Party. I got to play it a few years ago and was so psyched when they asked me back this year,” Hutchinson said. “It’s a really unique concert in a city I’ve gotten to know so well,” he added.
Hutchinson has been on the road as of late on his current tour. He performed in Boise, Idaho before Basilica and will also be touring in Illinois, Ohio, California and Maryland through August. Currently living in New York City, Hutchinson has become used to the hustle and bustle that occurs on a daily basis. “New York City is a pretty insane place, but I love it. I enjoy being able to just blend into the city after I get home from tour,” he told our TapSongz Team.
Growing up, Hutchinson always had a love for music, especially at a young age. He wrote his first song when he was eight years old and it just felt like a natural step for him. When he began his music career he looked to model his style after the Beatles and Stevie Wonder and wanted to write and sing his own songs. Another big influence for Hutchinson is Billy Joel, who Eric really admires to this day. “I just saw Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden and it was fantastic. I knew every song and sang them at the top of my lungs. I think the people around me wanted me to shut up,” he said.
Hutchinson really broke into the music spotlight with his album “Sounds Like This” in 2007. The 10-track project really exhibited his talent as a soulful singer and songwriter. The album’s hit song “Rock & Roll” went gold in Australia selling over 35,000 copies and the tune was used in the movie “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2”. Another upbeat song from the album is “Ok, It’s Alright With Me,” a festive tune featuring great piano, lyrics and energy from Hutchinson. He then released an album “Moving Up Living Down,” which featured his hit song “Watching You Watch Him.”
In April, Hutchinson just released his brand new album “Pure Fiction”, a project that he really enjoyed and was well received by fans. “The album happened so fast! I started writing the songs and they just poured out of me. It all felt like my whole career had been building up to this. I wanted to take chances and really push the songs and the music,” Hutchinson said. Be sure to check out his hit song “Tell the World” off of the record below! The album can be found on iTunes so be sure to give it a listen and support the pop artist!
While singing and touring can be exhausting, the whole scene is something that Hutchinson really enjoys. “I love getting to travel all around America and see how diverse and expansive it is. It’s truly amazing to see the different between how people live in Miami to Seattle to San Diego to Boston.” During his free time, Hutchinson enjoys tennis, baseball and football and recently the World Cup. “I got real big into the World Cup and was going to the bars with my friends and cheering like a crazy person for a sport I didn’t care about two weeks earlier. It was great!” Hutchinson said.
In the future, Eric has expressed interest in playing on Saturday Night Live and opening for Billy Joel, two doors that he hopes his hard work and new album open.
