It has been a couple of months since our TapSongz team last spoke to Futuristic. At the time, he was gearing up for the bulk of his “Traveling Local” tour, to promote his new album and connect with fans. After an exhausting tour around the country, focusing on concerts in the Midwest and West Coast, the time has finally come for Futuristic to drop his anticipated album.
Our TapSongz Team had the chance to speak again with Futuristic to get the scoop on everything that went into his biggest project yet. The new album “Traveling Local”, consists of 15 tracks featuring a variety of features and producers. Futuristic believes that the album differs slightly from his past projects. “It’s a lot more personal. A lot of it was written on tour so the title is definitely fitting,” Futuristic said.
Futuristic was able to expand his connections in the music industry and work with some new artists during the project. He ran into Chris Webby, a popular hip-hop artist, at SXSW a couple of months ago and they made a song right before the album submission deadline. Futuristic met Justina, another talented artist, on the Mike Stud tour that Futuristic was a part of so she gained a feature on the new album as well. Devvon Terrell, an artist who has collaborated with Futuristic in the past, is also featured several times on the album.
“Traveling Local” also encompasses a diverse group of producers, giving the album a variety of beats and style. DJ Hoppa created the scratches on one of the pre-released singles “Dirty Chucks”. AKT Aktion, a well-known producer out of Phoenix, Arizona, carried the bulk of the work, producing over half of the songs for the album. Futuristic also had the opportunity to work with Logic’s producer 6ix for one of the tracks. “The album turned out really well. My personal favorite is track 5 ‘That Thang’. It was a song that we went all out for and a dope music video will dropping in the near future,” Futuristic said.
“Traveling Local” is no doubt the biggest album that Futuristic has done yet, but he is already planning for what lies ahead. “My next project will be a mixtape. I’ve never released a mixtape. As a kid, I would sell CD’s in school and never gave my music away,” Futuristic recalled. Because Futuristic is an independent artist, he has to fund his own career and relies specifically on his tour and music sales. However, he understands the importance of mixtapes, especially in today’s industry and looks forward to this next project.
While Futuristic is currently an independent artist, that may not last long. His hit single from the album “I Guess I’ll Smoke” was released three months ago and has already gained over 900,000 YouTube views. “I’d love to work with Visionary Music Group. I’d be under a major umbrella and have a big push behind my music, while still keeping an independent aspect to my career,” Futuristic told our team. As for next year, Futuristic already has several goals in mind. “I’d love to make the cover of the XXL magazine. That’d be dope. I also want to go on 2-3 tours next year and get one of my songs on the radio,” Futuristic said. He also mentioned potential future collaborations such as Vic Mensa, Chance The Rapper, and Childish Gambino, as well as Visionary Music Group’s John Bellion. Futuristic was able to attend SXSW, a large music festival in Texas during his tour and hopes to continue to attend large festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza and SoundSet in the coming years.
