For the second year the Grassroots Music Festival is coming back to Rivers Edge Park in Council Bluffs, Iowa, from July 31st - August 2nd. The success of last year’s one day festival that featured only two national acts allowed for the festival to expand to three days this year featuring 20 national acts across many different genres. The first day features hip-hop and indie rock, the second day is strictly Southern Rock, and the third day is a mix of genres. Festival founders Jason Dick, Troy Weber and Darik Opperman felt the Omaha metropolitan area was in need of a larger music festival that appealed to all ages, and they certainly accomplished that. The lineup ranges from Kid Cudi to Lynryd Skynryd, DJ Snake, Matisyahu, and The Lonely Biscuits to name a few.

Here are three things to look forward to at this year’s Grassroots Music Festival:

Incredible Hip-Hop
Omaha has always had a void and need for a hip-hop festival within the city. Grassroots is bringing an amazing hip-hop lineup that includes: Kid Cudi, Mac MIller, Logic, Lupe Fiasco, Schoolboy Q, Matisyahu, Raury, and DJ Snake. Logic joined Kid Cudi last year on his Cud Life Tour and both are reunited back at Grassroots with much-anticipated impending albums. Kid Cudi’s “Speedin’ Bullet To Heaven” is expected to be released soon and Logic has been in Maui working diligently on his second major label album. Hopefully we can expect some new music from both artists and awesome sets from all the acts.

Great atmosphere

The Grassroots Music Festival is held at Rivers Edge Park, a picturesque outdoor amphitheater that overlooks Downtown Omaha from the opposite side of the river. Being on the edge of the river allows for a cool breeze to blow through the concert venue relieving festival-goers from the scorching August heat. This venue combined with a star-studded lineup and some midwestern hospitality is a great recipe for a successful music festival.

The Lonely Biscuits
The Lonely Biscuits are a local favorite among music fans in the Omaha area. The drummer, Sam Gidley, is an Omaha native and has played many shows in the area with the Lonely Biscuits, but none at a venue as big as River’s Edge Park. It will be exciting to see the amount of support the city gives to a local favorite when they play on their biggest stage yet. We can expect a classic set from this up and coming funk band and it is definitely not one to miss.

The inception of a major music festival is exactly what Omaha has needed. A city that is well-known for its love of live music has never had an opportunity to host a 3-day festival with this kind of lineup. With the major success of last year’s event, the anticipation is high for the second edition of the Grassroots Music Festival and there’s no doubt it will live up to expectations.
