Hayley Kiyoko put on an absolutely electrifying performance at the Bowery Ballroom before a sold-out crowd on Monday evening.
The band FLOR warmed up the audience with a great opening show. The music was kept steady with a strong bass drum beat throughout the set, making it easy for the audience to move along with the rhythms. The group had great stage presence, dancing around and teaching lyrics so the crowd could sing along to their songs. With an addicting beat and pop-rock style, the band made it impossible for the audience to not dance along.
After a short waiting period, it was finally time for the main act. The lights went dark and the music playing overhead stopped. “Hayley Kiyoko” was projected onto the black backdrop on the stage. The band started playing a beat. Suddenly, Hayley emerged from a smoky haze and jumped into the first song, “One Bad Night”, the namesake of her current tour. The crowd, consisting of primarily teenage girls, went wild.
Hayley proved her versatility throughout the night with her musical abilities. Along with vocals, she played the piano and a standing electronic drum pad. Every time she would rock out a drum solo, the crowd would cheer in excitement. Hayley played a variety of songs, ranging from her second EP, This Side of Paradise, to her last EP, Citrine. She even played her recently released single “Sleepover” in the midst of pink and red illuminated smoke. Her pop style songs featured a dash of electronic sound that made for the perfect combo that had the whole audience singing and dancing along.
Hayley took a moment during the night to have an honest talk with the crowd. She thanked the audience for “Creat[ing] a space for me in the music industry,” referring to the fact that her songs are LGBTQ+ friendly. Every song on her most recent EP, Citrine, is about having crushes on girls. It is still quite rare to find this type of perspective in popular music; yet Hayley has provided songs that a subset of girls can now identify with. Her most notable hit, “Girls Like Girls”, helped Hayley's rise to fame in 2015. The music video now has over 60 million views on YouTube and has become an anthem for those in the LGBTQ+ community. Hayley closed the show with this well-known track and everyone in the audience sang along: the perfect ending to an amazing show. Hayley has really proven herself as a musician and as symbol of representation. I highly recommend you check out her music below!
