Hozier took the stage at White River State Park in Indianapolis and delivered an incredible performance for all of those lucky enough to attend. The Lawn was buzzing with people of all ages anxiously awaiting the performances of both Hozier and his opener Dawes.
Dawes put everyone on the Lawn in a good mood with their gentle rock songs and easy-going sound. Dawes’ setlist featured songs from their most recent album All Your Favorite Bands as well as some of their other popular songs such as “When My Time Comes” and “A Little Bit of Everything.” Overall their performance was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience and they received cheers and applause upon exiting the stage after their closing song.
Hozier received a warm welcome from the as he walked onstage and immediately jumped into his opening song “Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene.” He then greeted the crowd and continued to play songs from his self-titled album. During his performance, Hozier told us some stories about growing up in Ireland as well as some of his experiences on tour.
The crowd cheered and sang along during the entirety of his performance. He closed with his popular song “Take Me To Church” but the crowd wouldn’t let his performance end there. Upon exiting the stage, the crowd cheered louder than ever, hoping for an encore. A chant began with everyone in the audience yelling Work Song, which he hadn’t yet played. After much screaming, Hozier returned to the stage to play three more songs. One of the three was his and his band’s rendition of Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s “Problem,” which they played “just for funsies.” To the crowd’s delight, he closed with “Work Song” and then took a bow with the rest of his band before exiting the stage in a wave of applause. Members of the audience were impressed at how good Hozier sounded live, almost identical to his recorded music.
Overall, Hozier’s and Dawes’ performances were excellent. If you have the chance to attend a show of the Hozier-Dawes Tour this Summer or Fall, you won’t be disappointed!
