Continuously impressing his fans, DJ Royal’s latest song “Passenger,” a wonderful blend of chilling harmonies and electric bass drops, climbed to the top 15 on ITunes under the electronic music category. Royal explains that his song “Passenger” was made after he closed down a music studio with his friends, and he had been getting back in to the swing of producing from his bedroom. “Passenger I hold close, just because it’s supposed to symbolize that euphoric feeling of being truly happy.” He’s not the only one who feels this way; his latest song and all of his music in general makes it nearly impossible to sit still and not feel some sort of bliss.
Royal started creating music when he was thirteen years old, playing drums and joining several bands. Some of his musical inspirations include Pharrell, Kanye West, Timbaland, and Quincy Jones. “All genuinely made music inspires me regardless of genre,” he explains. When he was seventeen, he started to grow much more serious about music with the collaboration of his friend I.V. The transition from a growing passion to a career became evident to him when he was nineteen years old and dropped out of college. He describes the experience as scary, but definitely worth it.
When it comes to public performance, Royal loves the energy, positive vibes, and connections he can make with the audience. When asked his favorite place to perform, Royal said “As of now it has to be at U Street Music Hall in my hometown of DC. The vibes are always right and people are super open minded musically.” Clearly, Royal values music as self-expression driven from passion as opposed to “making something marketable” or “popular.” His music helps him to better connect with himself and with his fans and audiences, which is refreshing and inspiring. “Music is something I never want to stop learning,” he says.
Royal plans to keep doing what he loves in 2015, promising performances in upcoming shows and festivals and new projects with other artists. “Cycles,” his latest EP was just released on January 26th through Octal Sound on ITunes and Spotify for free. We look forward to seeing what the brilliant up and coming DJ has to offer in the new year, while he seems just as excited to continue creating awesome music.
