The band has been playing for nearly a decade, but their unique alternative sound continues to give fans what they’ve been asking for. Jukebox the Ghost recently released the deluxe version of their self-titled fourth album “Jukebox the Ghost “, featuring 11 tracks along with 12 new solo piano tracks. Our TapSongz Team had the opportunity to interview Tommy Siegel of the band to learn more about their new album and summer plans.
Jukebox the Ghost is a pop trio band originally from Washington D.C., but currently reside in Brooklyn. Tommy recalls the unique music scene that D.C. displays. “When we were starting there the scene was interesting – there were a lot of indie-leaning pop bands floating around, but it was in the shadow of post-hardcore, which was just starting to peter out,” Tommy said. The band has been in Brooklyn for the past five years and really enjoys the change in scenery.
Jukebox the Ghost started when Ben and Jesse were dorm neighbors their freshman year. Tommy met them by putting up a flier in the music department and from then on their talent and ideas snowballed. “We all come from very different backgrounds musically. Jesse was more of a pop punk/ska kid. Ben was a classical whiz and I was more of a classic rock kind of guy,” Siegel said.
The band’s newest album is something Tommy is very proud of. “I think our self-titled record is our clearest vision so far. On other records, we wrestled with different facets of our songwriting. Coming into this record, we had somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 demos, and decided to make it our own ‘greatest hits’ record and just pick the ones we thought could be killer singles in their own right,” Siegel told our TapSongz Team. The project features hits including “Postcard”, “Girl” and “The Great Unknown”.
This summer Jukebox the Ghost will be hitting the road and joining Ingrid Michaelson on tour. “We’ve known her though some of our friends in her backing band for a while now. It’ll be fun to start a tour with so many friends/excellent musicians already on board,” Tommy said. After ten years of playing in the band, we asked Tommy if there was a piece of advice that he has learned along the way. “Just keep writing and writing and writing. The more you labor over your own ego or the logistics of a career, the less time you’re spending honing your songwriting craft. It’s good to hustle your creations on a business side if you believe in what you’re doing, but I think you need to do it once you’ve found your own voice and creative rhythm.”
At the end of the interview Tommy even hinted at the band’s plans to start working on their fifth record during the rest of the year!
