The combination of garage band rock and alternative is exactly the sound that Nico Vega has created in their newest project. The alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California is excited to release their brand new album “Lead to Light” at the end of July. In an exclusive interview with lead singer Aja Volkman, our TapSongz Team was able to get the latest surrounding the talented three-piece group.
The band experienced its first difficulties when the original drummer’s movie career took off, leaving the band with a missing piece. Volkman recalls auditioning 17 different people to fill the role. “We wanted to find somebody that we really enjoyed working with. Everything clicked with the new drummer that we chose. He’s a very ambitious and driven guy,” Volkman said. It has already been seven years since the band began playing together and the music is something Aja calls “magical”.
Nico Vega recently released an EP “Fury Oh Fury” in February of 2013 which was very well received with fans. The hit single from the project “Beast” had a huge resurrection, gaining a large amount of press and attention, which opened new doors for the band. It is the group’s newest project that has Volkman the most excited. “The new album has a garage-y, fun element to it. We have really grown as musicians and our sound has evolved, which takes time to develop,” Volkman said. “We have created an experimental, pop and rock sound for the project and it has been so much fun for us,” she added. The new album “Lead To Light” consists of 12 tracks and will be released to the public on July 22. The group had actually uploaded the album to Pandora to test out some of the tracks and they have gotten great reactions so far.
As the group has progressed, Volkman has seen her own talent and efforts improve over the years as well. “My song-writing abilities have come a long way. I’ve always had the heart, but now I have the creative freedom,” Volkman told our team. Nico Vega has typically toured heavily in the United States, but has also performed in England and London. They have been to a ton of music festivals over the years, including Great Escape in London and Life Is Beautiful in Las Vegas. Aja has really enjoyed touring with the band and seeing their fan base grow. “We built the band from the ground up. We have been to some venues at least 20 times over the years and it has been really cool seeing how much the audience has grown,” Volkman said. She has enjoyed it so much that she recently began working on a solo album on the side.
