A Nashville transplant from Fort Collins, Colorado, singer-songwriter Katie Herzig has produced five studio albums and numerous songs featured on popular TV shows.
She first fell in love with the band Toad The Wet Sprocket, which she encountered while growing up with folk music and 80’s and 90’s pop. Strongly influenced by Bon Iver, Enya and Gotye, Katie’s music depends on layers, “oohs and ahhs” and the way sounds are placed together.
After performing in choirs and orchestra through grade school, Katie started a band with some friends. “I never consciously aimed to make a career out of it, I just loved music and I loved that it was a context I could create in. Creating and making stuff up is really one of my strongest driving forces in life, less to do with making a career until years later when I realized that was my main income.”
Katie didn’t go to school for music, but stumbled into her passion while studying journalism and creative writing. “I found myself surrounded by musicians and songwriters and it gave me a safe place to explore that part of me.” Production came naturally despite a long learning curve, and she has gained confidence with each record.
When asked what she likes most about performing Katie cited the great moments when the band is one and the audience is right there with her, “don’t magically happen all the time.” Those moments “give me chills and I know I’m doing what I was born to do…but it’s a lot of work to get to those moments and to be present and enjoy them,” Herzig said.
Katie noted the evolution of her music from acoustic guitar as she’s embraced more electronic and pop sounds, though she is still drawn to “organic vibes.” “Really it’s just an evolution of what kind of music influences me and what tools I have access to,” Katie told our TapSongz Team.
When discussing her newest album “Walk Through Walls”, Katie admitted that she abandoned goals in favor of expressing herself. She said, “This record for me was a representation of a very deep season of life for me, which had to do with the loss of my mom and a new relationship, which can feel quite overwhelming. I can’t say which song I like best – it changed through the whole process.” Her favorites to perform off that record are Frequencies, Say it Out Loud and Forgiveness.
On collaborations, Katie said she would love to work with the artists who influenced her, and cited RAC as an artist she would like to create more remix tracks with.
To anyone interested in pursuing music, Katie’s best advice is “to experiment, have fun, take risks and if you feel energy coming back from what you’re putting out, keep pushing.”
In addition to writing and performing, Katie loves reading, hiking, yoga, movies, “long walks and deep talks” and visiting family in Colorado.
When asked her goals for 2015, Katie said, “Touring my record last year turned out to be a pretty full-on season that left me ready to be home and take stock of where I’m at in life. I want to focus more on things I love, which includes the new music I’m making but also the opportunities to try new things and get involved locally in things I’m passionate about.”
