He may only be 13 years old, but he has already accomplished more than many artists can dream of. Liam Lis, a seventh grader from New York City, has serious hopes of making it to the big stage one day. Liam began playing the ukulele and drums at an early age and started singing when he was only five years old. His passion for music continued when his grandparents gave him a bongo drum for his birthday and despite not having any formal lessons, he loved playing. While he just turned 13 in September, Liam has plenty of influences. “My inspirations are Kanye, Kid Ink and Ariana Grande.” Lis has a passion for following the hottest new Pop and Hip-Hop artists.
Liam had vocal lessons and wrote songs on his keyboard around the age of five or six. Lis’ hard work and impressive talent at such a young age earned him an excellent opportunity. “I did a showcase for Jason Flom. He is such a nice person and he believed in me,” Liam said. Flom, CEO of Lava Records, has done a great amount of work with Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Lorde. Lis has had the opportunity to meet Austin Mahone and Jessie J, deeply admiring both artists.
Lis has gained a large following on YouTube where he posts videos of different cover songs. When asked how he chooses which songs to sing, Liam replied “I just like the songs and the artists. I like the feeling.” His favorite cover so far is “Better In Time” by Leona Lewis. Lis is currently working on a brand new EP that will feature six songs. “I am making the songs with incredible writers and producers. I am mostly writing and co-writing them,” Liam said.
There is no doubt a lot in store for Liam in 2015. He hopes to be able to tour around America, perform at Madison Square Garden and meet his inspirations. The best part for Lis is that his school is so supportive of his accomplishments. While he has a lot of homework, Lis recognizes that he has a great middle school principal who is supportive of his music. In his free time, Liam loves playing basketball and going to concerts. His favorite shows include seeing Katy Perry and Bruno Mars, both of whom performed in New York City.
