There are so many up and coming artists in today's industry that it can be tough to find the ones with true talent. Our TapSongz team works hard to weave through the variety of rising musicians and pick out the ones we believe deserve the most attention based on potential. We recently came across Living In Shadows, a talented English duo who just released a self-titled, debut album. Our TapSongz Team deeply enjoyed the project and we had the opportunity to interview them to learn more about their upbringing, influences, new album, and future plans.
Living In The Shadows is made up of award winning vocalist Zoe Gilby and multi-instrumentalist Andy Champion, who are from Gateshead, United Kingdom. They both shared a love and passion for music at an early age. "We were both in our teens performing and writing music in various local bands. Living in shadows," the duo told our TapSongz Team. Key influences for the band include Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Slayer. They were able to utilize these influences to create their own unique sound that fans would enjoy.
Fast forward to today and the duo recently released their debut self-titled album "Living In Shadows". "We had been working together for a number of years writing, recording, and performing in the UK and internationally with more of a straight ahead jazz sound," they said. "I (Zoe) started devising melodies that had another scope to them than just our usual jazz approach. Andy had identified this and quickly set to work on developing the sound that encompasses our interests in progressive rock and alternative pop."
The eight track album was extremely well done, with a polished and professional sound. While it was a long-time coming for the duo the wait was well worth it as the project will not soon be forgotten. Our TapSongz particularly loved "Try To Take It Twice", an upbeat dramatic tune that lasts four and a half minutes. The song is catchy and Zoe's vocals are so pronounced, while Andy's instrumentals are on-point, making it the perfect collaboration. "Try To Take It Twice" is powerful and we love how the track turned out. Our TapSongz Team also loved "For The Day", a more laidback alternative song that is mellow and easy going. Here Zoe's vocals blend perfectly with the melody creating a tune that is bound to get stuck in your head.
The full project is definitely worth a listen so be sure to check it out on SoundCloud, their website and social media! Plenty of big things are ahead for "Living In Shadows" as the global pandemic comes to an end. The two have already had the opportunity to previously tour and can't wait to get back out on the stage. "We have been very lucky to have toured the U.K. and Europe. We would love to perform in the U.S. We particularly loved performing in Rabat, Morocco, a very spiritual place with its own special dynamics," the duo said.
As for this summer and the rest of 2021, Living In Shadows hopes to continue to write, record, and perform. "We are planning to release two singles and another album by the end of the year. We would love to tour this project too." Certainly keep an eye out for more fantastic releases from Living In Shadows.
