2020 has been a wild year, but it is so refreshing to see artists power through and release their creativity for fans to listen to during a difficult time. One such artist we recently came across is Makeba Mooncycle who has an awesome sound. She has a unique hip-hop sound and recently released a full album. We had the opportunity to interview the rising rapper to learn more about her new project and goals for the future!
Makeba is originally from Atlanta, Georgia and moved to New York with her family at the age of 3. She grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. "Growing up I loved KRS One, Rakim, Slick Rick, Dougie Fresh, Salt N Pepa Finesse, and Synquis. I also love Run DMC, Juice Crew and MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah. I love a variety of hip-hop," she said. Makeba used these inspirations to work on her own sound and has made strides in recent years.
"My latest project is called 'The Gibbous 2020' and has been released on all platforms via Distro Kid on June 21," she told our TapSongz Team. We absolutely loved how the project turned out keeping us engaged for all 11 tracks! "Twenty years ago I released a vinyl project called 'The Gibbous' through Buka Entertainment. Buka Entertainment was a company of Lone Catalyst J. Rawls and Jay Sands. I recorded a song with Talib Kweli called 'Lunchroom Classics' produced by J. Rawls. He said more people needed to hear me so he offered to release an EP which led to the release of 'The Gibbous'," she said. "Since this June made 20 years since the release of the vinyl version and it was never released digitally, I wanted to make it happen," Mooncycle added.
We absolutely loved how the entire album turned out, proving to Makeba Mooncycle's ability to differentiate herself in a crowded hip-hop industry. "Love Somebody" is track number five and has an awesome beat that perfectly displayed Makeba's talents as an artist. Her full potential is exhibited on "Grand Rising" where she throws her entire talent at the track, full of emotion. The song has a throwback vibe to it and is addicting to listen to as it can easily be put on repeat.
As for future goals, Makeba is excited about her future and potential. "I have never been on my own world tour, but I have performed in the New York City area, Washington D.C., and Senegal, Dakar," she said. "I am going to continue to release music in another project by Buck Oner through Anarchy Records. I have a single out called 'Never Ending Story', which I'm featured on with the amazing Cheena Black," she added. Makeba also has two other projects dropping before the end of the year!
