Over the past couple of months, our TapSongz team has had the opportunity to speak with a variety of up and coming artists who are ready to hit the big stage. We have greatly enjoyed writing up feature articles on these talented artists and will continue to do so! We believe that artists deserve more recognition for their hard work on projects, mixtapes and albums and we hope that you have enjoyed reading our editorials!
Finding the Rapper of the Month for May was not an easy task as several rappers within the industry have made large strides forward in their careers. Our team ultimately thought that a rapper out of Chicago who goes by the name Vic Mensa was well deserving. It is very evident that after an initial rocky road, Mensa has put in the work to find success and his fan base is only starting to take off.
Growing up, Mensa was a big fan of rock and roll, listening to The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. It was not until the fifth grade when Mensa began listening to hip hop and rap music. After his passion for music grew, he looked to put it to use in the industry and joined a group known as Kids These Days in 2009. The indie band eventually broke up in 2013 and Mensa looked to continue his career on his own.
After making an appearance in Chance The Rapper's "Acid Rap", Mensa looked to launch his own career. He released his second solo mixtape "INNANETAPE" at the end of 2013, which consisted of guest appearances including Ab-Soul, Thundercat and Chance The Rapper. In September of 2013, Mensa joined J.Cole and Wale on the What Dreams May Come True Tour.
In recent months, Mensa's following has been taken to the next level. He has released hit singles "Feel That" and "Down on my Luck" that have both been well received in the industry. Just months ago he was also chosen for the 2014 XXL freshman class. Mensa will also be performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago come early August, proving how far the young rapper has come in recent years. We encourage all of our viewers to follow Vic Mensa on Twitter and SoundCloud to keep up with his latest releases! Here at TapSongz, we hope you enjoyed this feature article as we continue finding tomorrow's greatest music today!
