Mel Yelle is a fascinating up and coming artist born and raised in Montreal, Canada. We had the chance to catch up with the audio engineer and lyricist to learn more about her music progression and plans for the future. While she grew up in Montreal, last summer she debated the move to Toronto or New York to check out the music scene. "I moved to Toronto just for the summer of 2015 to check out the scene and to see if I would like the city. I got myself a job at a music store and met a bunch of musicians and local artists from the city," Mel told our TapSongz Team. Singing is nothing new to the Yelle, who her parents claim was singing before she could speak. She always had a deep interest in music and singing was her favorite hobby along with dance.
Mel was even creating music in her early years. Growing up she idolized J Lo, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Nelly, and the list goes on and on. "Since I was 6 years old I wrote short songs and poems," Yelle said. "When I was 21 I decided to quit my plans of studying social working to pursue music. I attended a recording program where I got to learn how to use analog boards, sound systems, producing software, musical knowledge etc." Mel has been able to put this knowledge to use and has released a couple of beautiful tracks on SoundCloud.
Mel collaborated with Mista T Dot, who was previously featured on our TapSongz website last week, on a single "Downtown Summer". "The goal was to create an original pop dance track. The vibe of the song reminded me of the 90s, and Mista T told me he would like to call the track 'downtown summer' and it made sense to me, so I built the song around this idea," Yelle said.

Part of what makes Yelle's music amazing is her ability to produce. It is a task that is not easy, and while twisting and turning some knobs make look fairly easy from the crowd, there is a whole lot of talent and thinking that goes into place to make sure a song sounds just right. "In 2014 when I attended Recording Arts Canada I knew nothing about production. I did not only learn how to do live sound, but I learned how to do studio recordings (fairly quickly) and professional mixes," Mel recalls. Yelle took the program very seriously but came away with a lot and whole new mindset. "Studying in this field gave me the passion for sound design and creating sound effects.
In the studio Mel was able to put her new knowledge to use. She always had an appreciation for rock music and this ultimately led her to produce a unique punk sound. "Some friends of mine from Recording Arts Canada are in a punk band called 'Mean Cats'. In studio, I recorded one of their tracks and afterwards took the recordings, and mixed the song," Yelle told our TapSongz Team. " They allowed me to get creative. I added my own touch to the song and added backing vocals and harmonies." The song is called "Don't Wanna Hear a Sound" and can be listened to below. The single is awesome, featuring a more throwback punk sound that will make you want to dance. The project turned out extremely well and is a perfect display of Mel's sound engineering abilities.
As for the rest of summer, Mel plans to rest and simply focus on creating and composing new music. "I am just trying to take it easy, enjoying my ventures in a new city, networking and making music and recording. Hopefully we can work on a small music video," Yelle told our TapSongz Team. Throughout the rest of the year, Mel hopes to do a couple of more singles with Mista T Dot through the duo collaboration Melotika, while she works on her album along the side.
