Milky Chance put on a special intimate show at The Independent last night to promote their new album “Blossom,” and those lucky enough to get a ticket were graced with a stellar performance. The German folk electronica pop duo comprised of Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch took the stage for a sold out (and very eager) crowd. Accompanying them were two percussionists and a production display that would knock your socks off.
Milky Chance started the show off with some of the group’s new material including the recently released track “Ego.” The track comes off their sophomore album “Blossom” which is the next step in the evolution of Milky Chance’s sound. The track moves more away from folk-based melodies and takes Milky Chance’s sound to a place with a little more energy and a dash more pop. The dancing crowd voiced their opinion with screams of approval. A personal favorite of the night was “Blossom,” a track steeped in heavy basslines and classic Rehbein folky vocals. There were moments in the song when The Independent could have been a night club back in Germany with everyone jumping up and down to a wild display of rainbow lights.

While Rehbein may be the lead singer, Milky Chance is a duo, a fact proven through the showcasing of Dausch’s otherworldly harmonica skills and playful guitar battles on stage. This is probably the only time that I will recommend attending a show especially to see a harmonica player, but Rehbein is that exception. The harmonica is the ideal instrument in Milky Chance’s arsenal as it encapsulates their folk sound so wholly.
Milky Chance made sure to sprinkle their hits throughout the show. Rehbein might as well have taken a break during Stolen Dance, Flashed Junk Mind, and Down by The River as the crowd sang (almost) every word at the top of their lungs.
If you’re not lucky enough to catch the duo in one of their intimate shows you will for sure see them on the festival circuit this year, and don’t forget to check out “Blossom” coming out March 17!
