After a successful college career at Michigan State, Maurice Ager was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2006 NBA draft. He had reached the top level of athletics and accomplished what millions of kids at home can only dream of: playing professional basketball. But deep down, Ager knew that his true passion fell with music. The NBA was an outstanding experience for the young athlete, however he had no control over how many minutes he played per game or his destiny with a team. Ager played a handful of seasons in the NBA, before deciding to transition his career to what he truly loved: music.
“Music was my first love. My mom was a singer and my dad was in a band. I started writing music when I was seven or eights years old,” Ager said. He worked on coming up with cool melodies and looked up to Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. While he loved music growing up, he had a strong talent in basketball. He would go on to play at Michigan State and eventually entered the NBA in 2006. After flip-flopping teams and eventually being released by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2011, Ager had decisions to make. “It was a fork in the road and I had to make a choice. I wanted to do something different. I spent a lot of time with my church and stepped away from basketball.” Ager produced an entire project with a friend and loved it. It was then that he realized that he wanted to do music full-time.
Ager traveled to Los Angeles to become a well-rounded producer. The best part about music is that there are not any boundaries. “I don’t put a cap on anything musically. I’m currently producing and rapping and I enjoy both,” Ager told our TapSongz Team. He released his first big project in February of 2013 titled “Moe Town Vol. 1”, an 18-track album. In December of 2013 he released a popular single “Forever I’m a Spartan Rose Bowl Edition”. When asked if Ager has a favorite song to play he couldn’t choose and compared it to picking a favorite child.
At this point in his young music career, Ager is focused on producing tracks. He has several projects that will be released in the next couple of weeks. The versatility that Maurice displayed on the basketball court can surely be seen in his music. Ager can freestyle, record and loves giving advice to younger producers. He has always had a large impact on the community and enjoys giving back through his Moe Ager Hoop School, a fundamentals basketball camp held in the greater Los Angeles area. We look forward to seeing what Moe Ager will release next as he is clearly an individual that knows how to succeed. Be sure to follow Ager on his social media sites that are linked below.
