Mexico City-based Mylko is an electronic duo comprised of producers Jose Pablo Ibarra (Jopa) and Patricio Davila Sanches (Pato). The two formed Mylko three years ago, seeking to reimagine the genre of electronica by infusing innovative production concepts with soulful and heartfelt lyrics.
The pair grew up in Mexico City listening to such artist as Air, Daft Punk, and the Chemical Brothers. They have each performed in numerous bands since high school, knowing they were interested in pursuing a music career. While playing in a pre-Mylko band, the two found that they worked exceptionally well together and decided to split from that group, writing and producing music together. They’ve been told that their music resembles that of James Blake, Metronomy, and Junior Boys.
The best thing about performing is “the adrenalin rush and the energy of the crowd – a 40-minute show feels like it takes five minutes.” Their favorite song to perform is Astray, though all their songs are fun to play since they have numerous aspects working together throughout. As Mylko, they’ve played throughout the United States and particularly enjoyed Dominican Republic, where the shows are usually filled with friends.
When not focused on music, Jopa and Pato love watching and playing basketball, which doubles as a pastime and a stress relief: they try to play twice a week.
Looking to the future, Mylko is trying to continue pushing themselves and evolving their sound, stretching further from their comfort zone. For the next few months they hope to play more shows and start creating new music next year: “Right now all of our efforts are going to the release of our album ‘Contrast’ in September. We’re working on new material but our main focus is the album and the live shows.” They hope to collaborate with such artists as Flying Lotus, Wet Baes, and SBTRKT in the near future.
Look out for Mylko’s new album, set for release on September 30, and check out their upcoming live shows!
