The R&B industry has recently been revitalized. After a dry spell, artists including The Weeknd and Bryson Tiller gave the whole industry a rebirth and R&B fans are loving it. This has opened the door for many up and coming artists including Nina Browwn, an outstanding young, talented artist out of Toronto, Canada. Our TapSongz Team had the opportunity to speak with the singer-songwriter regarding her progression so far in her young career.
Browwn will be the first to admit that being from Toronto has definitely impacted her sound. "The music scene is different here than the U.S. because the market is different and it's all over the place, even within the same genre of music. The R&B market is very tough to break into, competition is high, but it's also a genre that has almost taken a bit of a back seat," Nina said. "The market has impacted me personally because most recently I realize that we too deserve to be respected for our talent and are finally getting our time to shine. I realize that it’s now or never for me too and it’s my time also!" Browwn sees a transition occurring in the R&B industry and is hoping to be a part of the "new generation" of R&B.
At an early age, Nina took singing, piano and guitar lessons. She began guitar at the age of nine and piano and vocal at the age of 14. "After a couple years at music schools which I did not feel were cultivating my voice and skills as they seemed like a revolving door of teachers, I moved on and started taking lessons with a vocal coach who specialized in Classical so I started singing opera from age 16," Browwn informed our TapSongz Team. "At first I was not in love with it because as you can imagine, kids at that age usually can't appreciate Classical music although now in hindsight, I realize that I always loved it but never really realized it." Nina never was interested in the music industry for the flashing lights or becoming famous, but rather the ability to move people with her music.
Our TapSongz Team was very impressed when we first heard Browwn's single "Listen", featuring Ghost. The tune is outstanding and perfectly displays Nina's potential as a singer-songwriter. Nina is extremely proud of the song and how the project turned out as a whole. "This song is the first single off my EP that I released and it was produced by Earl Powell of Eptone Music Productions. Earl's team introduced me to Ghost who is originally from Chicago's Westside however is now based out of San Diego, California." It turned out that Earl's team discovered Nina on Reverbnation as she was ranked (and still is) in the Top 5 on Reverberation's R&B Toronto charts. "I saw it as a great opportunity for me and we began working together."

Throughout the rest of 2016, Browwn intends to build up plenty of momentum and buzz in preparation for her album release, which is expected to be in early 2017. "I plan to have more of my singles on the radio, definitely here in Canada, but also in the U.S. Midwest where I have made some contacts." Our TapSongz Team is excited to hear Nina's album in 2017 and think she is definitely on the right path for success.
Part of the reason Nina is able to create such unique songs is through her lyrics. "Many of my songs are personal experiences I have been through. I feel it is the best way to relate and connect with the song because it's something I know. They are also based on stories friends and family have been through so in essence, they all hit home for me because they are all connected to me, in one way or another." Whenever she has an idea come to mind, Nina quickly writes it down in a notebook, typically already having the melodies in her head. Songwriting is not an easy task, however Browwn seems to have a successful system in place.
With a handful of tracks on SoundCloud and more singles on the way in preparation for her new album, Nina Browwn is doing everything right to further gain the spotlight in the R&B industry.
