The creativity seems unmatched in the industry. It was first “Here It Goes Again” that shocked the music video world, when OK Go accrued over 24 million views to the iconic treadmill video five years ago. The band is back at it again with another instant classic, this time riding motorized scooter chairs throughout a variety of scenes. Tim Nordwind, vocalist as well as bass guitar for the band, gave us an insight on the video for “I Won’t Let You Down” as well as their newest album “Hungry Ghosts”.
OK Go started in Chicago in 1998, eventually signing to Capitol Records out of the windy city. “I met Damian in singer camp in Northern Michigan at the age of 11. We made stuff together ever since we were little using videos, camera recorders and music,” Nordwind said. After school they would meet up in Chicago and play with Dan, a drummer in their band during college.
When asked if he thought “Here It Goes Again” would have the success that it did, Tim responded, “We were surprised. It’s tough to sit down and write a single and be able to predict what it will be like.” OK Go was really looking for an upbeat song that could be matched with their treadmill music video idea. They collaborated with Damian’s sister to create the final video.
“Hungry Ghosts”, which was released back in October, features 12 new tracks from the band. “It’s a lot more electronic than our previous work. It is very reminiscent to Pop that we grew up with in the 80’s,” Nordwind said. It is the Pop/Melodic sensibilities that pull all of OK Go’s albums together, but “Hungry Ghosts” definitely features a heavy Pop vibe. We encourage all of our viewers to check out the new album on iTunes and support the Los Angeles-based band!
OK Go has been keeping busy since they released the new album. The band has toured throughout the U.S. and will be going on an international tour this Spring in Europe, Russia and Japan. Nordwind closed the interview with a cliffhanger when describing their goals for 2015. The group is hoping to develop something for television in addition to working on a “crazy science project.” “We have some special touring ideas that I can’t say much about, but they are crazier than the normal club tour,” Tim said. It is only a matter of time before OK Go blows our minds with a new, innovative music video.
