Music wasn’t even in the picture for Ryan Cabrera growing up. He had little interest in the field as a career and never had the intention to become a musician. He listened to a wide variety of music including Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and The Beatles, eventually turning to soul singers and enjoying Ray Charles. At the age of 17 he picked up a guitar and started training by watching Dave Matthews videos and learning the songs he played. His interest in songwriting grew. “Around 19 or 20 I was in a band and we were awful,” Cabrera recalls. “My brother got me some recording time for my birthday and people started to buy my music.” Joe Simpson saw Cabrera perform one night at the Hard Rock and loved the potential that Ryan displayed.
Around the age of 20, Ryan decided to drop out of school and work with him. “I wasn’t meant for college. I was a terrible student. I went because my parents wanted me to and I didn’t even have a major,” Cabrera said. But soon, Cabrera’s music started to become noticed. He had previously tried to work with several different labels, but none of them were willing to take him on. “All of the labels that had told me no were all starting to call me and try to get me back.”
Cabrera’s music career has seen a great amount of success so far with his hit singles “On the Way Down” and “True” both accruing over 1 million views on YouTube and becoming staple songs for early 90’s kids growing up. Years later, Ryan is back to work and ready to release a new EP. “These days people’s attention spans aren’t full albums.” His new 5-track EP “Wake Up Beautiful gives fans an idea for where his upcoming album is going. The EP is a fun, positive, diverse project and every song has its own vibe. Ryan had already released a single from the project titled “House On Fire”, an upbeat Pop tune that is bound to get stuck in your head. The catchy music video for the song is provided below! After the EP warms fans up to his new work, Ryan is set to release a bigger project.
Cabrera has been working on the album for eight years and plans to release it late summer. “I wait until the end to create an album title; a week before its supposed to come out. I let it name itself,” Ryan said. The project features several collaborations that have been on Cabrera’s bucket list, including a song with Travis from the band “We The Kings”. To promote his new music, Cabrera will be going on a 50 day U.S. tour with Secondhand Serenade starting on March 10! “I’ve been doing a lot of acoustic shows, but this is a full band tour,” Cabrera told our TapSongz Team.
Since he first began singing, Ryan definitely sees a transition in his music that has matured for the better. “The more experiences you have in life the better your songwriting gets. This record is a lot more mature. I’ve been through a million more things.” Cabrera’s goal for 2015 is simple: spread the love for his music. “I want to reach as many people as possible and work our asses off. I’ll be on the road for the rest of the year and I love it.” Be sure to follow Cabrera on his social media in the links provided below and give his brand new EP “Wake Up Beautiful a listen!
