SAINT WKND, an up-and-coming DJ and producer hailing from Germany, put on a fun show at U Street Music Hall in Washington, DC this past Wednesday night. In less than a year, 23-year-old Max Seethaler has garnered over 18 million unique views on SoundCloud. He is currently traveling the US with Norwegian DJ Jerry Folk for their Foreign Affair tour.
SAINT WKND came onstage at 11 PM dressed in a white Supreme shirt and backwards cap. His style embodied the typical Generation Y style, something he widely embraces, especially on social media: his Twitter intro says “☾ | 週末 | GENERATION-Y.” His scruffy facial hair, heavily tattooed arms, silver bracelet and numerous rings completely screamed indie. The trippy, captivating background visuals just helped to reinforce his cool, hipster vibe.

As soon as SAINT WKND got onstage, he was already mouthing words and moving to his own music. He entertained the crowd well by dancing with the audience and leading with his infectious energy. SAINT WKND teased the loyal audience by unexpectedly mixing in snippets of his most popular original track, “Golden,” during his opening sequence.
SAINT WKND’s music mixes deep house beats with tropical-esque melodies. Tracks like “Youth” lean towards tropical house, while “Survive” is a mix of R&B vocals and house drops. Listeners don’t have to be overly familiar with his music in order to enjoy the easy-flowing sounds. His music shoots me back to bumping in underground clubs of Berlin.
The night’s set featured remixes scattered through his original sequences. He then played everything from oldies like Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and OutKast’s “Ms. Jackson” to classics Miike Snow’s “Genghis Khan” and Khalid’s “Location”. The set was largely overlaid with hard deep bass hits and light trap, which the crowd eagerly dropped to.
While the show was solid overall, some of the transitions were rather abrupt. His sudden pause of a remix to “I Can’t Stop” left the confused audience swaying awkwardly. Despite that, the artist’s energy and cheerful smile had everyone in a good mood. Although the venue wasn’t packed, the crowd’s animated dancing made up for it. Overall, it was a fun show and I definitely see a future for SAINT WKND.
