Of the three times I have seen Sofi Tukker live, this was hands-down the best performance. The New York-based duo, Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, brought down the house last night at 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. The sold-out show was the first stop on their Treehouse tour.
The stage was transformed into a real Treehouse: it was covered in flowers, leaves and plants, as rain forest and bird sounds helped set the scene. After a half hour of anticipation, Sofi Tukker came onstage and immediately started playing “Energia,” the second track on their new album. They yelled, “Can you feel the energy?” and the crowd screamed and cheered in response. The duo hyped the audience up even more by showing off coordinated dance moves.
Despite their ever-growing stardom, Sofi Tukker was incredibly down-to-earth and real. They wanted to connect with their fans and invited two audience members onstage to do the “Awoo” dance while they performed. The dubstep twist on the track made the show even more dynamic. Little moments added to the emotional connection between Sofi Tukker and the audience, like when Sofi accidentally fell on stage, but got right back up while looking at the audience sheepishly. And when her guitar suddenly stopped playing, she and Tukker poked fun at themselves. As opposed to a show with just tracks after tracks, these hiccups and interactions made the performance feel more real.
Since DC was the tour’s first stop, it was the first time the duo performed many of their new tracks. Sofi even said, “This is so cool -- you guys know all the words and it’s the first time I’m performing this! Let me check in with you there to make sure I’m getting it right!” The audience laughed and kept singing along.
Right before the end of their set, Sofi announced, “This will be our ‘last song’,” emphasizing her sarcasm with air quotes. After the song, they went offstage and the crowd cheered loudly for an encore. They came back after a few excruciating seconds as Tukker joked, “You still have to call for an encore, guys!” Then they started performing “Moon Tattoo” and Sofi ended with expertly-controlled high notes. After the first encore, Tukker spontaneously asked if we wanted to keep going. The audience unanimously yelled in affirmation, and they performed two more tracks before ending the show. The duo expressed their gratitude by telling the crowd how much they loved them and that they would be by the merchandise table to meet and greet fans.
Sofi Tukker put on a fantastic show last night and really entertained the audience with their music, dancing, and bubbly personalities. These two performers are truly unafraid to inject their character into their shows. And if that wasn't enough, they are even donating $1 per ticket to support Planned Parenthood. Overall, it was an amazing performance and I strongly encourage you to check out their new album and try to catch them on tour!
