Taking a break from writing and producing music at their new home in Los Angeles, Mellen Funke and Lyell Evans Roeder of Tigers Are Bad For Horses returned to their DC home city for a Thursday night show at local rock club DC9. The two met at Georgetown University, from which they graduated in 2013 and 2015, respectively. We had the chance to sit down with them following their nearly sold out showing at U Street Music Hall earlier this summer.

Fondly known as “Tigers” and abbreviated as TABFH, the electronic-alt pop duo mixes keyboard, electronic riffs and folk-infused lyrics to produce a sound that remains unique and engaging throughout songs bordering on different genres.

The duo cruised through their set in front of a packed weeknight crowd. Pulsing beats, lilting vocals and clean chords characterized their seven-song set. Mellen’s impressive vocal range provided a steady complement to Lyell’s live mixing and exciting keyboard riffs. Numerous songs featured friend Aamir Javaid on the tenor sax; he’ll be guest-starring in the next few shows on the East Coast. Javaid added punchy beats and jazzy rhythms over Mellen’s vocals, cementing the digital aspects of the song with an in-person and entirely improvised aesthetic.

Thursday's show featured staples from their 2015 EP “TABFH” including crowd favorites Messenger and Overflown.  An outstanding rendition of Outkast’s Roses - to which the audience sang along with almost deafening enthusiasm - was bookended by the debuts of new songs Wings and Tinder Date, fitting decisions for the hometown show. The group closed with their newest hit Embers to roaring applause.

Concertgoers were dancing and jumping right up to the end of the band’s 50-minute set. The energy in the room was established, the fans were excited and the band was applauded enthusiastically as the group left the stage.

TABFH is shipping up to New York City for two more shows this weekend before heading back to LA. Catch them performing at So Far Sounds New York and then back in LA next week, and check out their Soundcloud and social media pages!
